It’s May 4, which means it’s Star Wars day! Many of you will most likely be in the throes of Star Wars fever and might be thinking of binge watching the previous six movies. The Star Wars universe is more than just the original six movies though and spans across TV, books and comics. Of course there’s the whole confusion about the OLD expanded universe and the now official timeline according to Disney. So to help things out, we’ve made an infographic detailing ALL the official books, movies, TV series and comics in an easy to follow timeline.
For non-hardcore fans who are still confused about canon and non-canon, here’s the gist. Before Disney’s purchase of the entire Star Wars franchise, there were a plethora of novels, comics and games that sat in the Star Wars universe. Known as the expanded universe, this various media included tales from the far-flung history of the Star Wars universe as well as its far-flung future.
The expanded universe had a huge following and created many well-loved characters including Admiral Thrawn, Leia and Han Solo’s kids (Jacen, Jaina and Anakin Solo) and of course, the most loved of them all Mara Jade, the Emperor’s Hand, reformed dark side force user and, ultimately, Luke Skywalker’s wife.
That’s not all. The expanded universe also had some major moments that got to the fans; the death of Chewbacca, the marriage of Luke and Mara Jade, one of the Solo children turning Sith.., etc… but eventually, the whole universe just got too big.
Which is not surprising that when Disney took over the franchise, they decided to do away with it and start afresh. So anything that was done prior to April 25 2014, be it novels, short stories, games, TV and movie specials,, they didn’t count anymore. There are a few exceptions which included the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series and movie, but aside from that, the timeline would be dictated by Disney and the old expanded universe were now called Star Wars Legends.
So out with the somewhat old, and in the with new. At least now with the new Star Wars timeline, the whole universe can start afresh. The old expanded universe was getting jumbled, complicated and at times, really badly managed. Hopefully, with Lucasfilm Story Group handling continuity management under Disney now, it’ll be less… complicated.
So, want to know what’s official in the Star Wars continuity since April 25, 2014? Then check out our infographic below. Remember to click on the image so you’ll get a bigger view of the infographic. Till then, enjoy and May the Force be with you!
