HOLY SH*T! No way, no way! We’re actually getting a new Hellboy movie?? Ever since the release of Hellboy II: The Golden Army in 2008, fans have been clamouring for a sequel to this underrated movie. While both Hellboy and Hellboy II were critically acclaimed (81% and 85% on Rotten Tomatoes respectively), they failed to reach the same level of success amongst mainstream audiences. Hellboy (US$66 Million production budget) failed to hit the US$100 Million mark at the worldwide box office, while Hellboy II (US$85 Million production budget) merely grossed over US$160 Million worldwide. And so, it was quite evident that a sequel wasn’t going to happen, not anytime soon at least.

To add insult to injury, earlier this year, director Guillermo del Toro declared that the long-awaited Hellboy III would not move forward and instead we would be treated to Crimson Peak II: Extra Incest

However, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola had other ideas. Announcing on Facebook earlier today, Mignola said:

“Okay, here’s some news. There IS going to be another HELLBOY MOVIE.  It’s going to be an R rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) and staring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy. More news to come soon.”

I guess this is where we simultaneously rejoice and grieve.

New Hellboy movie? Hell effing yeah! But can you imagine a Hellboy movie that isn’t helmed by the masterful Guillermo del Toro?

Let’s stay positive here guys. While it’s disappointing that this is a reboot and not the much clamoured for sequel,  the idea of an R-Rated Hellboy reboot does sound intriguing.

In a time where we’re bombarded with comic book movies that constantly follow the same tried and tested formula, this could provide a fresh experience much like Deadpool and Logan did.

Stay tuned for more updates!
