Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void introducing the Liberator unit

Terran players of Starcraft universe, take note! Blizzard has a new unit for you and it’s called the Liberator.

It’s described by the game developers as a “large, high-cost air unit that deals splash damage against its enemies in the sky.” As the video shows, the unit is quite adept in shooting down clusters of Zerg Mutalisks or Protoss air units. The Liberator is also capable of ground support but this is limited only to units. Any ground units that enters a specific area will be targeted by the Liberator or it can serve as long range harassment unit.

Senior game designer David Kim wrote on, “ We want this unit to make the Starport more rounded along with the other changes we’re bringing into Legacy of the Void, like the banshee movement speed upgrade and the Battlecruiser Tactical Jump ability. By introducing this unit to the Starport and separating out the Terran mech vehicle and ship upgrades, we think it’ll allow for a more diverse set of strategies for the Terran. It will be difficult to upgrade all three of the Barracks, Factory, and Starport tech routes, so we’re hoping to see a good variety of mixed tech units depending on the matchup and strategies players choose to go.

The unit was added to the closed beta as part of version 2.5.2. It is available at the official site now.

Is Sony working on a next gen console?

The job offer
The job offer

The Japanese giant, Sony, is looking to hire new game programmers but for what? Many fans are speculating that the company could be starting to assemble a team to create the PlayStation 5.

The current flagship gaming console, the PlayStation 4 is faring pretty good in Japan, North America and Europe despite stiff competition from Microsoft’s Xbox One. The machine was released in November 2013 and  had about 22.4 million units shipped around the world compared to Xbox One’s 10 million figure according to the latest statistics. However, when the American company dropped the price of the Xbox One, it got a massive surge of popularity that might prompted Sony to begin development of their next console.

The rumours began with this innocent looking job ad by Sony:

“We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!”

The word “next generation” is pretty tantalizing.

So, is it really a PlayStation 5 as many people hoping for or a continuation of Project MORPHEUS development or something else that we never heard of?

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is getting rebooted

The old movie
The old movie

20th Century Fox is reportedly interested in rebooting Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or, as it was known in the movies, LxG. Alan Moore’s comic take on classic literary characters forming a Victorian era “super-team” was adapted into a movie back in 2003 and suffice to say, it was a flop and sadly it was also he last appearance of Sean Connery as an actor in a movie.

Now is it possible we might see a more deserving adaptation of the movie? Possibly as Fox intends to reboot the franchise with Ira Napoliello and Matt Reilly supervising it. According to sources, the studio did try to revive the franchise back in 2013, except instead of a movie, they were going to go the TV series route. Obviously that didn’t happen.

However, it’s very likely that with Marvel Studios roaring success with the Avengers, as well as Fox’s own X-Men movies, the studio is mostly likely angling for one more successful, long running movie franchise which they can ride on. After all, you never know when Marvel would want their X-Men franchise back to join the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With the public’s increasing reception to superhero series and movies, Fox’s decision in this matter might be a good one. The LXG  reboot would be a nice alternative to the current spate of MCU and gritty DC movie universes, if done correctly at least.

As for getting Alan Moore’s blessing, well we doubt they’ll manage that. After all Moore has publicly stated that he would like nothing to do with any movies that were being made off his work. It would be nice though if he could put his input in, but well, here’s to hoping.

Caliban confirmed in X-Men: Apocalypse

The albino mutant

Caliban will appear in the new X-Men movie after director, Bryan Singer shared an Instagram photo of him shooting a scene in an underground set.

Shooting Caliban's place of "business" #Xmen #XMenApocalypse

A photo posted by Bryan Singer (@bryanjaysinger) on

Who is Caliban?

He is basically an albino mutant who is specialized in detecting and tracking down other mutants (just like the Cerebro used by Professor X) . The ability makes him a invaluable ally or tool to anyone with an agenda. He belongs to a group called the Morlocks, mutants who choose to hide underground and Apocalypse recruited him to be a member of the Four Horsemen in the comics.

The official profile of Caliban by Marvel:

Caliban is able to psionically sense the presence of other mutants within a 25 mile radius of himself. Originally, Caliban was able to increase his strength to superhuman levels and absorb fear-generated psionic energy from fear radiated by others, turning it against them when his adrenalin levels rose. Apocalypse’s genetic manipulation enhanced his strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes to superhuman levels, and allowed him to use his fear-casting powers at any time. Apocalypse subsequently altered Caliban’s powers to allow him to generate a psychoactive virus that attacks from within on the highest planes of the psyche. Having lived for many years underground, Caliban’s eyes were sensitive to even the smallest amount of light, but recently that seems to no longer be the case.”

Interestingly, another Morlock member, Angel Dust that’s portrayed by Gina Carano will appear in another Marvel movie, Deadpool.

X-Men: Apocalypse starring Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters back in their roles from previous films, including Rose Byrne, who is reprising her role as Moira McTaggert from First Class. New cast members featuring people like Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers, Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Olivia Munn as Psylocke, along with Oscar Isaac as the main bad guy, Apocalypse.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in theaters on 27  May 2016.

Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Ninja Slayer) updated their Kickstarter site for their pet project, Little Witch Academia 2/リトルウィッチアカデミア 魔法仕掛けのパレード which its first short excited a lot of fans 2 years ago under Anime Mirai project. Here is the anime short that started all of this:

They admitted that the production have fallen little bit behind the schedule and the rewards for the Kickstarter pledge will be also delayed.

They revealed that the music score for the anime project is already wrapped up at Moscow.

Also, the production team shows off some work in progress which is displaying the background illustrations and snapshots of the finished scenes. Here are some of the comments made by the team:

Little-Witch-Academia-2-snapshot-1 Little-Witch-Academia-2-background-illustration

I believe the analog/hand painted style background is one of the selling points of LWA! Most of the anime series today use full digital backgrounds (not to say they are bad) but LWA was fortunate enough to take the time to use quality hand painted backgrounds.”

“To finish it off, the snapshot from some of our finished cuts! I bet everyone was curious about our new girls from our previous update, so I went and snatched a colored screen of the three.
And, lastly a shot of Diana! (Sorry for being biased, but she’s my favorite character!)”

The crowdfunding is a massive success with US$625,518 achieved with set goal at the modest US$150,000. Since the milestone of US$500,000 breached, there will be release of Little Witch Academy 2 in Blu-Ray format which will be divided into standard edition and limited edition. Standard edition comes with audio commentary and making of whereas the other one will include the former both plus OST and exclusive artbook of the anime.

Little Witch Academia 2 will be over 40 minutes long.

The staff list includes Yoshinari Yoh (Gurren Lagann Parallel Works) as the director who also the character designer with Masahiko Otsuka (Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt) as the scribe. Michiru Oshima (Full Metal Alchemist, Xamdou) is the music composer.

The anime is scheduled for release somewhere in 2015. For more information, check out their Kickstarter site.
