Powerpuff Girls is back

The Cartoon Network series Powerpuff Girls is back and the network billed it as “reimagined” ten years after its original debut.

The designs of the characters do not differ very much from the old series but the trio are voiced by a new team of voice talents : Amanda Leighton as Blossom, Kristen Li as Bubbles and Natalie Palamides as Buttercup. Tom Kenny is back as the Narrator and the Mayor. We are not sure if the girls will be fighting the same kooky bunch of villains like SHE or Mojo Jojo again though.

The story is still about three superhero girls who have to balance crime fighting and normal life, with the new show targeted for 2016 release worldwide which there is a high anticipation of licensing rights for domestic and international regions. It was announced during 2015 Licensing Expo at Las Vegas by Cartoon Network.

Emmy Award winner producer Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) and Bob Boy (Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!) will the executive producer team for the series.

It has been wonderful to see this new show team bring such passion and positive creative spirit to this iconic property,” said Chief Content Officer, Rob Sorcher. “We know that fans of every age will appreciate this new take on saving the world before bedtime.

Originally shown at Cartoon Network back in 1996, the franchise is started by Craig McCracken and won two Emmy Awards alongside five nominations and accolades from animation industry. 78 episodes were produced plus 1 full length motion picture with Warner Bros in 2002. Anime fans can spot a lot of Studio Ghibli homage in the old series too and not only that, the series is renowned for very dynamic camera angles during action sequences.

Remember, sugar, spice and everything nice and of course Chemical X.

New development in live action Akira

Classic Akira

Warner Bros’ attempt to get the live action adaptation of Akira up and running has so far proven to be difficult. Originally, the studio got the rights in 2008 and had been trying to work with Leonardo Dicaprio’s Appain Way for the movie but died down due to scheduling issues. Few years down the road, directors like Hughes Brothers, screenwriter Gary Whitta and stars like James Franco, Gary Oldman, Garret Heldund, Helena Bonham-Carter, Zac Efron and Keanu Reeves were rumoured to be involved in the project but zero results.

The latest setback involving director Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Orphan) in 2014 was when the studio balked at the idea of spending more than US$70 million for the production which the director is struggling to accommodate. In the end, the studio pulled the plug and shut down the production facilities at Vancouver for Akira.

While all of this going on, fans of the original are not too keen of “whitewashing” of the original Japanese characters too.

Now, Warner Bros is looking to Marco J. Ramirez (Daredevil, Orange is New Black, Sons of Anarchy) to draft a new screenplay for Akira. He has been praised for a knack of writing hard-hitting, gritty, intense action with dynamic relationships between characters. Right now, he is taking the showrunning position from Steven S. DeKnight for the season two of Daredevil. Perhaps, the studio wanted a more grounded story that won’t cost a bomb when comes to effects and keeping it real between characters like Kaneda, Tetsuo and Colonel Sjikishima while easing off the more fantastical elements of the original material.

But will it be the same Akira that we know and love?

The Huawei P8 is a value alternative to your pricey flagships

Usually when you think flagships, you think major hole in your wallet. Not the case with the Huawei P8 though they aim to position itself as an equal alternative to your Samsung Galaxy S6’s without burning a hole in your pocket.

To that effect, the Huawei P8 does pay some focus to design. It has a metal unibody design that’s only 6.4mm thick, thinner than the Galaxy S6’s 6.8mm and iPhone 6’s 6.9mms. You get a 5.2” IPS Full HD display with some pretty thinner bezels so it’ll smaller in your hand compared to smartphones of similar screen sizes. One thing’s for certain, its overall build is way more improved than its predecessor the P7.

And what about its guts? The brains powering the P8 is Huawei’s own in-house 64-bit Kirin Octa-Core 930 processor that’s mated to 3GB of RAM. It gets a slightly decent 16GB of storage with the option of memory expansion via microSD. The microSD slot itself is pretty interesting as it shares the same slot as the second SIM slot for the P8. So if you need to run two SIMs and an expanded storage at the same time, you’re going to be out of luck.

Specs aside, the Huawei P8 is putting a lot of emphasis on its photo taking capabilities. To start of, it’s kitted with a 13MP main camera has Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). This ain’t your normal OIS though according to Huawei. They claim they have improved it to tolerate shakes better at 1.2 degrees. That’s double of what other smart phones are capable of.

That’s not all in the camera department. Huawei also boasts that the P8 has the world’s first 4-colour 13MP sensor. Supposedly this would improve brightness by 32% and 78% noise reduction in low light. It doesn’t end there, the P8 also gets a DSLR-level ISP which helps to optimise its picture quality.

For the more experimental, smartphone photographers, you’ll be glad to know there’s one feature you’ll definitely find interesting. It’s the P8’s light painting capabilities. It’s pretty simple to use as there’s no need to adjust shutter speed or manul settings. Just select the right mode and start drawing with any light source.

Not a still images person? Then you’ll love this video mode. The P8 has a rather unique Director mode that works in-sync with 3 devices. You can have each P8 set up to capture different angles and the director mode lets you select the combine the right footages for the final video on the fly.

Pretty interesting features if might say so ourselves. To round it off, you’d need some decent battery life and Huawei has kitted the P8 with a 2,680mAh non-removable battery. The company reckons that this capapcity could last up to 1.5 days in normal use or up to 1 full day on heavy usage. Surprisingly Huawei lacks any fast charging features on the P8

The Huawei P8 runs on the Android 5.0 Lollipop with its own custom EMUI 3.1. And it comes with a a couple of smart features including the rather odd knuckle sense. This lets you screen capture and crop using your knuckles. Yes we know it sounds pretty weird but hey it might be a thing. There are also a couple of features that help to boost its WiFi and 4G LTE connectivity including a faster network lock-on while roaming.

The P8 wasn’t the only phone to be announced during the regional launch either. Also announced was the Huawei P8 Lite. As the “Lite” would indicate, it’s an affordable compact version of the P8 that’s also coming to Malaysia. As expected, you get some scaled down specs compared to its flagship sibling.

First, there’s a smaller 5″ display that pushes a lower HD 720p resolution. Under the hood, it gets a mid-range Kirin 620 processor with 2GB RAM, though the 16GB of storage is the same. As for camera, it gets a 13MP + 5MP cameras and for battery, it gets a slightly smaller 2,200mAh capacity battery.

So when can we expect to get our hands on these two new smartphones from Huawei? The P8 itself is already available for pre-orded inthe Malaysian market via VMall at RM1,799. Availability is expected around the 18 June period though a set date has yet to be announced. The P8 Lite price and availability has yet to be announced either.

Paramount Pictures might have a Beyblade movie in the works

Paramount Pictures, who had turned two Hasbro toy franchises (G.I. Joe and Transformers) into billion dollar movie efforts successfully is now turning their ever hungry eyes on the next one – Beyblade. The movie giant got the rights to turn Beyblade into live-action feature (oh no) which will be produced by Mary Parent via Disruption Entertainment.

For those who have zero idea on what Beyblade is, the toyline was started by Tomy Takara (who also started Transformers) in Japan, reportedly inspired by traditional Japanese fighting tops. In the native country and North America, the franchise is a strong success, bolstered with multiple anime series and video games. It is estimated that Beyblade franchise made US$2.5 billion in revenue.

The toy line was licensed to Hasbro in 2001 and got a second life in 2009 when second generation called Metal Fusion became a big hit worldwide. Next generation of Beyblade lineup is planned for 2017 release. As for the live action feature, we have no idea on when, who and what for now.

Newly announced Monster Hunter X is set for end of this year

The Japan-only event Nintendo Direct event which happened not long ago had Capcom show off an announcement trailer for Monster Hunter’s latest chapter – Monster Hunter X ( it means Cross here). You can check out the new features such as character classes, weapons, monsters and attack combos with every existing weapon in the game’s arsenal. Some fans even pointed out that the traditionally unsexy Gunner has been tweaked to be more “appealing” here.

Capcom definitely took a lesson or two from the DMC franchise and made the attacks visually cooler in the new game. Action is fast and furious, plenty of space and opportunities to show off in loud way. Some areas might look familiar to the veterans of the franchise such as the original Monster Hunter village from G and 3 Portable for example.

The Japanese company said it will be ready for “Winter 2015″ which pretty much means end of this year for 3DS platform.

So far, no words if the game will be available on international market though. The last game, Monster Hunter 4 is launched at Japan on September 2013 before it is internationally released as Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in February 2015.

Andy Serkis, the man who made Gollum awesome, a humane King Kong, majestic ape leader Caesar and last seen as the villainous weapons dealer Ulysses Klaue in Age of Ultron has appeared with a mocap suit during a session of Star Wars: The Force Awakens shooting. Celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz who had photographed many behind the set images of Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back revealed the shot of the said actor during an interview at StarWars.com.

Andy Serkis in mocap as Supreme Leader Snoke

The name of Serkis’ character in the upcoming Star Wars is Supreme Leader Snoke.

Many fans felt that he will be the leader of Imperial remnants called the First Order and possibly master of Kylo Ren the lightsaber user seen in the trailers. Or he is just another factional leader in the First Order, possibly competing against Kylo Ren for the leadership? Well, that’s all we know about Snoke for now.

The breakdown of the known actor/actresses with corresponding characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

1. Rey (Daisy Ridley), a ship scavenger eking her life on desert planet of Jakku

2. Finn (John Boyega), the sweating and helmet-less stormtrooper who came across Rey

3. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), hotshot pilot of X-Wing who is on a mission for a certain princess which came across Rey and Finn later.

4. Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o), a space pirate leader

5. Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), officer in the First Order, rumoured to be the direct superior officer of Finn.

6. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), mysterious dark robed lightsaber user.

Only Domhall Gleeson (Ex Machina) left as the cast member without a known character in the movie. The highy anticipated movie will hit the theaters on 18 December 2015.

Chris Pine may join the cast of Wonder Woman?

Seen in Star Trek

Reliable sources have just let on that Chris Pine (Star Trek) is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to be Wonder Woman’s love interest, Steve Trevor. This is might be the first major update for Wonder Woman‘s current director, Patty Jenkins (Monster) after the much publicized departure of Michelle McLaren (Game of Thrones).

The movie’s script is written by Jason Fuchs (Pan) and the movie is set for release on 23 June 2017. While no official information has yet been released on the plot of the movie, rumours are saying the story will be focusing on Paradise Island where the Amazons have broken into factions fighting each other. When a mysterious male pop out in their midst and asked for help, the titular hero follows him to the human world and that’s where her adventure begins.

Before this, actors like Scott Eastwood (Fury), Liam Hemsworth (Mockingjay series) and Alexander Skarsgard (Battleship, Melancholia) were being considered for the role. There is a consideration that Chris Pine might take up the role of Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern reboot too. Undoubtedly, that means the rumours of Scott Eastwood playing Steve Trevor in another DC universe movie, Suicide Squad are essentially debunked.

For those who felt the director’s name is familiar, Patty Jenkins had a very public episode with Marvel few years ago when she is fired due to “creative differences” during the making of Thor: The Dark World. Reportedly, the firing didn’t go well with one of the co-star, Natalie Portman. In the case of Michelle McLaren, the studio wanted a more character centric of the female superhero story but McLaren wanted an epic scale treatment complete with 1920s setting and a talking pet tiger. Plus the studio isn’t so sure if she can pull it off since her experience is only limited to TV, not multi-million dollar movies.
