It’s 2044 and the Earth’s environment is slowly deteriorating into a desert. The one thing that’s helping mankind get through this is technology and it’s technology that has created Automata Pilgrim 7000, a quantam android designed to support humanity in these harsh times. Governed by a set of security protocols; 1. A robot cannot harm any form of life and 2. A robot cannot alter itself or others, what happens when these protocols are breached? Looks like it’s time for Antonio Banderas or rather Jacq Vaucan to find out.
Yes you read that right, it’s Antonio Banderas in a Sci-Fi film. Not exactly the staple sort of film you’d usually see Mr. Zorro take part in, it does though look pretty promising as it explores a new take of the Three laws of robotics theme that was first penned by Isaac Asimov. Automata itself looks like a cross between Blade Runner and I, Robot, which by all means seems like a pretty good mash up to have. As director Gail Ibanez would put it, the movie is a sci-fi film noir, that explores the concept of evolution and what life would be like for us humans in the near future. So far from the trailer, it’s already caught our attention with its interesting Asimov-ian theme and thriller/noir like pacing. Will this be a sleeper sci-fi hit, a nice break from all the overt sci-fi action films we’ve been exposed to lately or will it be just another misleading trailer? We certainly hope it’s going to be the former.
It isn’t just Mr. Banderas involved either as other cast members include his wife Melanie Griffith, an almost unrecognisable Dylan McDermott and if your were a Black Adder fan, Tim McInnerny. Other cast members you might not be familiar though like Andy Nyman, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, David Ryall, Bashar Rahal, Andrew Tiernan and Christa Campbell.
A release date has yet to be set but it’s expected for an October 14
