Not trick or treating this Halloween or out for a costume party? No worries cause we’ve compiled a list that will give you some hair-raising chills. While some skeptics would never admit to being scared by an animated scene, we’re pretty sure these anime (in no particular order) hits will solicit a few surprised jolts or make it really hard for you to courageously keep your eyes open.
1. Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories
Right, we realise that the title of this anime might have some of you more juvenile readers giggling, but don’t be fooled, despite the pretty hilarious name (at least in our part of the world), this collection of short ghost stories are not for the faint of heart. While centred around urban myths in Japan, each tale tells of a story that really, could happen to anyone, even you. The animation style is unique in that it mimics story telling using paper art. This combined with the skillful and spooky narration of Kanji Tsuda brings the scary scenes to life and provides the perfect setup for some frightening moments. Watch alone at night, preferably with the lights turned off, for maximum scare effect. Please note though, we won’t be held responsible if you experience any paranormal activity after.
On a side note, if you’re hooked, there’s also a Yamishibai mobile game. Download it for Android here or iOS here.
