8. Paranoia Agent

Scream, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street. If there was anything these horror movies had in common was the fear the main visual antagonist gave you. Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Ghostface, these were characters that scared the hell out of you. And it’s with this same theme that the late Satoshi Kon’s Paranoia Agents goes with. In the anime’s case, it is the a character called Shonnen Batto, a grinning, baseball cap-wearing juvenile who travels on golden inline skates and attacks people with a gold-colored metal baseball bat that is curiously bent.

Doesn’t sound like a particularly scary antagonist if you line him up against some of the Hollywood greats, but when you bring in the brilliance of Satoshi Kon for building suspense and mind games, you got yourself an thriller, psychological/horror anime that’ll keep you at the edge of your seat.
