5. Lazarus

Lazarus (1)

Genre: Dystopian sci-fi

What it’s about: In a dystopian future, several powerful “Families” rule the world, jealously hoarding the planet’s resources for themselves, and oppressing other humans, or “Waste”.  In each Family, there is a Lazarus – their most powerful family member, given every scientific enhancement and physical advantage they can be given, and serving as the Family’s enforcer, protector, and executioner. In the Carlyle Family, that person is Forever Carlyle.

An unkillable female enforcer in a Mad Max-esque world. Now that's a movie we'd pay to see

Greg Rucka’s critically acclaimed masterpiece may feature an ass-kicking female lead character, but Forever Carlyle is not the only main attraction of this book. Rucka has built a world that is rich in detail, with loads of backstory, and with all the right ingredients for a full-blown Mad Max-esque actioner with a lot of dramatic depth.
