4. Silver Surfer
Creators: Dan Slott, Mike Allred, Laura Allred
What it’s about: Bald, silver former herald of Galactus with a surfboard travels around the universe with Dawn Greenwood, mild manner innkeeper.
Why it’s great: What’s the first thought that comes to mind when you hear the name Silver Surfer? Well, whatever it is, chances are “funny” would be one of the last things you’d think of. Well, Slott and Allred’s Silver Surfer run will make you rethink that, because it’s currently not only one of the most inventive, but also one of the funniest books in Marvel’s stable (sorry, Deadpool).
The main attraction here is Mike Allred’s artwork and Laura Allred’s colouring, which gives the series a sense of fun, wonder, and wild inventiveness that is too seldom seen in a mainstream superhero comic.
Pairing a cosmic being like Norrin Radd with the distinctly ordinary Dawn Greenwood is another twist that Slott pulls off surprisingly well, as his interactions with Dawn bring out the human side of the Silver Surfer and turns this into a cosmic space adventure that is strangely down-to-Earth at the same time.
