3. Banking on star power
Casting-wise, DC are placing their bets on star power, roping in A-Listers like Will Smith, Jared Leto and Tom Hardy for Suicide Squad, Dwayne Johnson for Shazam, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and of course, Ben Affleck as Batman to spar with Henry Cavill’s Superman.
Casting so many A-listers in their movies could be costly, but it might just help pull in non-superhero fans that have been on the fence about movies like Suicide Squad or even Shazam.
Still, Marvel have proven that it is possible to make a successful movie without A-listers, so it should be interesting to see how DC’s plan works out. After all, Robert Downey Jr. aside, most of Marvel’s main heroes have been played by actors who aren’t exactly in the A-list (sorry, Chris Evans). Even Downey Jr, to a certain extent, only managed to revive his previously stalled career thanks to Iron Man.
