Looks like it’s the end for Sega and Archie Comic’s long running Sonic the Hedgehog comics, as Sega is pulling the plug on their partnership with the comics giant after 24 years.
The move doesn’t come as a surprise though, as Archie had removed the comic book line from their list of subscriptions. Sonic Universe, Sonic Super Digest, and Sonic Super Special Magazine are among those which are being removed.
Still, this is following years full of issues (both the comic type and the troublesome kind) but it doesn’t mean that there will no longer be Sonic in comics. Sega America dropped a statement:
After 24 years of memorable storytelling, SEGA of America will conclude their Sonic the Hedgehog publishing partnership program with Archie Comics. This does not mark the end of Sonic in comics but signifies SEGA of America’s decision to take a different direction for the series that will be announced at a later date. SEGA would like to thank Sonic’s amazing fans for their loyalty and passion over all the years. SEGA looks forward to providing more information soon.
Granted this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of Sonic on paper, but with over 290 issues, I’d say it’s had a good run.
