Pixels is an upcoming American movie based on a short film by Patrick Jean starring Adam Sandler (Grown Ups 2, The Wedding Singer), Kevin James (Grown Ups 2), Josh Gad (Jobs, Frozen), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Brian Cox (X-Men: Days of Future Past) and Sean Bean (Jupiter Ascending, Game of Thrones). It is directed by Chris Columbus (Percy Jackson series) with script adapted by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling. The story is about alien’s misunderstanding the video feeds of classic video games (Pac-Man, Donkey Kong) as a declaration of war by humans so they launched an invasion on our home planet using the exact video characters.

The inspiration of the movie came from this short film:

Instead of the fearless F-18 pilots ala Independence Day, the President of the US summoned his former good friend who happens to be a champion videogamer from long ago to lead the defense of the planet. In the trailer, we can see Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Frogger and a Pac-Man lookalike aliens hellbent on destroying the world while the heroes band together trying to stop them. Certainly it looks fun, giving the similar feeling like Wreck-It-Ralph type of geek nostalgia comedy with more “adult” feel to it. Knowing Adam Sandler’s style of humour, expect some crass and in-your-face jokes too. There is even an appearance of the original creator of Pac-Man in the trailer, Toru Iwatani.

The film project has been in gestation for a long time, the studio bought the rights in 2010, went through few rewrites in development phase then goes into principal shooting on 2 June 2014. The movie is originally scheduled to release on 15 May 2015 but got pushed back to 24 July 2015, perhaps to avoid the Avengers 2 dominance on the box office.
