From the moment comic book superheroes took the leap from their individual comics to “shared universes” where they can cross paths and go on adventures together, comic book readers (and, it seems writers) have revelled in the idea of their favourite heroes battling it out to see who is greater.
With DC Comic’s big two, coming to blows later this month in Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice, we take a look back at some of their most memorable clashes on the comic book page, as well as a few duds that neither hero should be proud of, and perhaps get some idea of what director Zack Snyder has in mind for his version of this classic match up.
There’s an undeniable appeal to the concept of the favoured sons of Metropolis and Gotham duking it out, even if, based upon their power and skill sets, the outcome of any fight should be a foregone conclusion. After all, what can one man, even a Batman, possibly do against a godlike being of almost limitless power? What human could possibly be faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive? In part therein lies the appeal; what if the batman could defeat the last son of Krypton? if he could, how would he do it?
Before we can resolve this first you need to have a reason for the two to fight.
