After a week of shadowy teasing, Bandai and Sunrise unveiled a new Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Iron-Blooded Orphans (Kiddou Senshi Gundam: Tekketsu no Orphan) in a press conference recently.

We have got a good look at new a Gundam – Gundam Barbatos which evolves in stages and able to loot its defeated enemies in order to upgrade itself. Main characters of the series were also introduced – Mikazuki Augus and his childhood friend Orga Itsuka.

Official synopsis:
300 years after the end of a great war between Earth and Mars called Yakusaisen (Calamity War), the Earth, losing the ruling authority during the war, structured a new world with a ruling system. A new war on Mars is starting while the Earth is in temporary peace.

The main character Mikazuki Augus, from Chryse Guard Security (CGS), was on a mission to protect Cuderia Aina Bernstein, who wants Chryse, Mars’ city, to be independent from Earth’s ruling. However, a group named Gjallarhorn started a rebellion, attacked CGS and Cuderia, and the adults in CGS decided to use the boys in the team as decoy to evacuate. Orga Itsuka, the leader of the boys, decided to use that as a chance to launch a coup d’état because the adults have been treating them badly for a long time. Mikazuki, with Orga’s request to defeat Gjallargorn, uses Gundam Barbatos, a major mobile suit that CGS used during Yakusaisen to fight.

The director is the highly regarded Tatsuyuki Nagai (ToraDora!, AnoHana) with scripting handled by the famous Mari Okada (ToraDora!, AnoHana), character design by Michinori Chiba and mechanical designs are by Naohiro Washio, Kanetake Ebikawa, Ippei Gyoubu, Kenji Teraoka and Tamotsu Shinhohara. Music scoring is by Masaru Yokoyama who did splendid work on Shigatsu Kimi no Uso and Queen’s Blade franchise. The massive number of mechanical designers on the series reflects a new direction of Mobile Suit designs, Bandai needing fresh blood to keep the fans buying the GunPla models. With the presence of director and writer team duo from the AnoHana series, this might be hinting a more character driven story and drama.

Gundam SEED fans might notice the story and feel is somewhat quite reminiscent of Astray or old timers might be getting the vibes of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.

Bandai will never miss such an opportunity here – having announced a new 1/144 HG series, a new 1/100 GunPla and several figures based from the series. Since Gundam Barbatos can use its opponent’s arsenal , the GunPla version of it can be customized with many parts from other GunPlas. The smaller version is set for release in October whereas the bigger one will come in November in turn.
