Samsung announced a new, souped up portable SSD that has been cranked from 250GB to 1TB called the Samsung T1. Coming in at only 9.2mm thick, it’s beautifully encased in a chrome metal finish which might play a part in it’s pricing.
The storage uses a new Samsung 3D vertical NAND arrangement which arrangwa transistors on top of each other to minimize space usage. Similar tactics have been used in internal SSDs so this doesn’t come as a surprise. Hopefully, this will spur other manufacturers to make it an industrial standard as it is much safer to carry around compared to the traditional spinning platter that is commonly used.
Samsung has also included AES 256-bit hardware encryption on the T1 as a security measure which allows users to set a master password to prevent unauthorized access. This might interest business and government clients as secrecy is paramount in their day-to-day work, not so much for the average Joe on the street.
The company is offering 250GB, 500GB and 1TB versions, coming out later this month. The price will be an extraordinary – US$179.99 (RM639) for 250GB, US$299.99 (RM1056) for 500GB and US$599.99 (RM2131) for 1TB.
