Finally, its here!

The next generation of USB connectors is finally ready to hit the production line and was showcased for the first time at CES 2015. The completion of the new USB Type-C specifications had been announced in August last year, which leads to a future where long suffering users will soon get to use a new reversible configuration with a robust cable and connector standards designed for both mobile and larger devices soon.

Sharing the same dimensions (8.4mm by 2.6mm) to the Micro USB, the Type-C’s most exciting and essential feature is its reversible design, which will allow users to disregard the orientation when plugging in one of the new smaller, sleeker cables. No more struggling to fit in your cable!

Type C USB 3.1 is designed to have speeds up to 10Gbps with Power Delivery up to 100W and can scale down to slower speeds accordingly if being hooked into older devices.

Representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive, and IT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard,” said USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman Brad Saunders. Although the Type-C plug and receptacle cannot be directly plugged into their predecessors now, the newly released specification will also cover adaptors for existing products to address this issue by the group.

With the formal introduction of the plug at CES 2015, we should be finding it in future electronic products soon this year with wider adoption in its wake.
