Fox has announced the special release of X-Men: Days of Future Past called Rogue Cut. Reportedly, 17 minutes were cut from the final edit and now Fox has restored it for this special release. Ten minutes alone is dedicated to development of Anna Paquin’s character, Rogue hence the name.
Her sequence is said to be involving Magneto and Professor X trying to break out Rogue from holding cells where she is the power source for the new Sentinels. It happens around the middle of the movie when Wolverine jeopardizes the mission by hurting Kitty Pryde. The new trailer shows mostly footage from the original edit of the film then we see Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) saying Rogue’s name. Then we have a short glimpse of Rogue in Days of Future Past timeline with white streaked hair and that’s it.
The edit is to address the plot issue when Rogue went missing and making Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) handle the time-phasing alone despite being injured. Hopefully this version will make sense of the omission and perhaps makes the movie experience even richer.
The reason given by the filmmaker as to why such crucial scene being snipped off is it will slow down the pacing of the movie. According to the scribe, Simon Kinberg (Fantastic Four, X-Men: Apocalypse), “The Rogue/Anna Paquin scene was by far the biggest cut we made, and that was more my fault than anything. When I was crafting the script, I wanted to create a subplot for old Charles and old Eric — Patrick [Stewart] and Ian [McKellen] — to have a mini-mission together, one final adventure. And that’s what the Rogue sequence was — that they went to retrieve Rogue.” He continues, “It felt like it didn’t come from the spine of the film, it was an appendage where I just wanted to see the old guys get in the X-Jet for one last ride. It was a narrative detour, and in a film with this much momentum and narrative flow, you can’t afford any detours.”
We shall see if this reasoning bears any truth when the DVD/Blu-Ray and Digital HD out on 14 July 2015.
