Conventions tend to be a lot about cosplay, anime and game related stuff but how does Malaysia’s first prop-centric convention fare? Here’s what we think.

While cosplay and games/anime related conventions are a dime a dozen, there hasn’t been a convention dedicated directly to propmaking and fabrication. The Cre.ART expo is just that, being a place where people can not only show off their wares and creations but also learn how to put some of that awesomeness together.

The event was put together by Helios-E and Shirropi DIY, with support by Craftiviti over at Evolve mall a couple of weeks back and it was a relatively simple affair.

You could pick up materials from the various booth vendors who were stationed around the hall, or you could take part in the many workshops that ran that day to brush up on your skills or learn new ones! The prop and costume showcase also had some pretty nifty stuff on display.

There were also two contests running during the ‘con, one being an extremely spicy Street Fighter gaming challenge and for those epic level craftsmen, a costume contest.

Overall, I think the event was a good first attempt, given that a lot of conventions tend to have a lot of emphasis on the cosplay element as opposed to the art of creating these epic costumes.

It was a shame I personally couldn’t sit in on the workshops (it was a three-event weekend and I am just one person) but I have attended the Helios-E run workshops in the past and I have no doubts they were informative. The turnout could have been better but again, it was a weekend with a lot of events going on (including Bersih!) so that’s somewhat understandable.

The Cre.ART expo is expected to make a return next year so we’ll be keeping an ear out for when it does. If you did attend the event, be sure to drop them some feedback here!

I’m hoping for greater things next time around! Also, check out the gallery below for what you missed!
