Daniel Dae Kim is joining the cast of the Hellboy reboot, replacing Ed Skrein for the role of Ben Daimio.
This is pretty good news, considering that Kim does bear a lot of likeness to Ben Daimio. The change is also in response to the critique of the character being whitewashed, as they are of Asian descent. Kim recently left the set of Hawaii 5-0, due to unequal pay compared to their white counterparts, in a bid to shed light on Hollywood’s racial bias towards non-white actors.
Skrein himself wasn’t removed from the film but instead stepped down from the cast, and offering an apology over the insensitivity of the casting and hoping for a brighter future for underrepresented groups in the industry.
Hellboy will be directed by Neil Marshall and star David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan.
