Before you start chasing me with flaming pitchforks, hear me out. I’m not a DC hater. In fact, I actually love the DC characters more than the Marvel characters. Don’t believe me? Ask my girlfriend. There were more than a few occasions where my girlfriend approached me wearing sexy lingerie, only for me to turn down an evening of sex for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy marathon. #Truestory #Noiliedbutyougetmypoint
Having said that, the DCEU has been a GIANT MESS since day one. Sure, some of you might like Batman V Superman more than Captain America: Civil War, which is fine. But, that’s not what the general critics and box office numbers reflect. I’ve not been too pleased with the DCEU either. While Man of Steel, Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman are all reasonably enjoyable, they’re nothing to shout about.
So, what on earth has been going on?
Well, it mostly has to do with poor management.
PAUSE. Just to give you a random piece of information that you most likely do not care about: My bladder is about to explode. Should I head to the toilet before I continue? Nevermind, I’m in the zone. I shall plough through.
In an article I previously wrote for Monkeys Fighting Robots, I discussed the turmoil that the DCEU is going through right now.
On the other hand, things are absolute chaos in the DCEU. The movies have been average at best. Nobody seems to know what’s going on. Warner Bros announces a new movie every week. They’ve hired and fired 275 different directors to work on The Flash, and, it’s now undergoing a page one re-write. They announced a Shazam movie God knows how long ago, with no further information nor progress whatsoever. Then a couple of months back, they announced a two-part Shazam/Black Adam movie. And there’s also some nonsense about Gotham City Sirens. #HORSESH*T!
And don’t even get me started on The Batman (in which Ben Affleck has stepped away from the director’s chair).
But recently, things looked to be changing. Wonder Woman has been receiving nothing but praises from critics who have caught the early screening, and The Rock recently talking about the Black Adam / Shazam movie. Just when I thought things were finally in order… MORE CHAOS!
As per a scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, director Doug Liman has decided to part ways with Justice League Dark. What I find really perplexing is the fact that in an interview with Collider a while back, Liman mentions how he’s very passionate about this project.
I have to have a passionate connection to my films, which I do with Justice League Dark… I feel a real connection to Justice League Dark. But part of my process is that, when I finish a movie, the movies I choose to do after it are guided by the experience I had on the previous movie.
So, what changed, Mr. Liman?
My guess is, the studio executives annoyed the crap out of him just like they did to all The Flash directors that have come and gone. Regardless of how great Wonder Woman turns out to be, the DCEU will face long term repercussions if they do not fix their backstage political issues. The DCEU needs a leader like MCU’s Kevin Feige. Can someone get Christopher Nolan onboard? Pay him a bajilion dollars and a lifetime supply of Victoria’s Secret models if you must.
Anyway, while we groan about Justice League Dark, let’s watch the trailer for Justice League Regular. Also, I’m going to take a piss now. Finally!
