After the introduction of Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi movie The Martian with a slew of promo still images in-fim and behind the scenes, now we have this “introduction” video showing astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) introducing himself and the crew of the expedition to Mars; codenamed Ares. Pilot Rick Martinez (Micheal Pena), Commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain), Dr. Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan), astronaut Aleks Vogel (Aksel Hennie) and computer whiz Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara) can be seen in the video as the crew of the expedition.
Based on book by Andy Weir, the filmmakers are striving to use realistic science in this movie without the typical Hollywood treatment of space scenes. The main attraction of the story is the Robinson Cursoe-like survival adventure when Mark Watney got stranded on Mars.
We also get to see Jeff Daniels, but his role and character’s name are still a mystery.
Official synopsis of the movie:
“ Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?”
The Martian will be featuring other actors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years of Slave), Sean Bean (Jupiter Ascending), Kristen Wiig and Donald Glover, set to land at the cinemas on 25 November 2015. Perhaps in time for Oscar nomination.
