The Rocketeer is one of the all-time Disney classics that most people have heard about, or at least seen as a kid. Given that a lot of movies are getting reboots and sequels these last few years; it was only a matter of time before it got a sequel from Disney.
But this won’t be a simple continuation of the story or a reboot; instead they are going with the surprising decision to have an African-American female lead as their main, with the story taking place six years after the original Rocketeer.
Called The Rocketeers, this is the movie’s synopsis:
The new take keeps the story in a period setting and offers a fresh view on the characters. Set six years after the original Rocketeer and after [Cliff] Secord has vanished while fighting the Nazis, an unlikely new hero emerges: a young African–American female pilot, who takes up the mantle of Rocketeer in an attempt to stop an ambitious and corrupt rocket scientist from stealing jet-pack technology in what could prove to be a turning point in the Cold War.
The original Rocketeer was about a pilot named Cliff Secord who discovers a jet pack and uses it to defeat a Nazi spy. If you haven’t yet seen it, we strongly suggest you do!
The new movie will be written by Max Winkler and Matt Spicer, with Billy Campbell (the original Rocketeer) to possibly reprise his role. Brigham Taylor and Jon Favreau are producing alongside Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the Carolina Panthers. Maybe they’re just really big fans of the original movie?
No word on who will be the director yet however.
We assume there is plenty in the works so we’ll be keeping you in the loop when we get any new info like launch dates and cast. So stay tuned!
