After just two seasons running, Disney XD’s Wander over Yonder is heading off into the sunset.

Creator of the show, Craig McCracken did want a third season of the intergalactic comedy-fantasy series to go on; with big plans for new characters, the return of old ones and backstory; having pitched season three to the company.

However it was turned down for non-specified reasons by the “the higher up bosses of bosses of bosses at Disney,”. The decision was apparently not made based on ratings for season two because the show couldn’t be renewed before the second season premiered.

Wander Over Yonder recently won the Annie Award for Best Animated Television Production for Children.

McCracken has also previously voiced his frustration that he hasn’t been able to tell deeper, more complex stories in Wander in a recent tumblr post. He explains that Disney execs had insisted on standalone shorts for “for the sake of repeats, ratings and for programming a 24 hour animation channel”.

He did manage to eventually reach a compromise for season two where some elements of continuity made its way into the show but it still wasn’t substantial.

As for McCracken’s future plans, he apparently is working on a brand new series (under Disney as well) but time will tell what its about. Hopefully it doesn’t get the same treatment Wander did.
