Razer has just announced a new OSVR headset during E3 and the open-source platform it runs on is compatible with Steam VR.
The Hacker Development Kit 2 (HDK 2) comes with custom designed lenses and an OLED dual-display with a 2160 x 1200 resolution. It’s capable of displaying virtual reality at 90fps and has image quality enhancing tech under the hood to reduce screen door effect.
Hardware wise, it’s supposed to be able to stand up to headsets like HTC’s Vive and the Oculus Rift. However it will also feature diopters for people with prescriptions from +4.5 to -2 so you can comfortably use the OSVR without glasses.
There’s also a possibility that a motion based controller of some kind will be released alongside the headset, but given its open nature any company interested in creating a compatible controller will be able to produce their own
The headset will retail starting this July for $399.99.
