Good news for Star Wars fans!

Disney and Lucasfilm made a few announcements on the upcoming Star Wars franchise at its annual shareholders meeting at San Francisco – Rian Johnson (Looper) is confirmed to be the scribe and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII which is scheduled to hit the cinemas on 26 May 2017.

Another development is that Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) will be working on a spin off movie titled Rogue One starring Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). The filming will start soon and expected to be in the cinemas next year, specifically on 16 December 2016. Rogue One is based on an idea by John Knoll who is an Oscar winner VFX supervisor which adapted into screen by the writer of Cinderella, Chris Weitz.

Apparently, another spin off movie by Josh Trank, the director of Chronicle is still shrouded in secrecy.

Speculations are hot on the spin off movies that are based on the early days of Princess Leia and galactic rogue Han Solo but so far, it no solid lead on these rumours yet. Plus, we do not know how these two spin offs will fit in the canon story of the franchise, especially with the J.J Abrams movie is gathering full steam for this year’s release. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is opening on 18 December 2015 and the story is set 30 years after destruction of the second Death Star and the apparent death of Emperor Palpatine in the Return of the Jedi.

Disney spent a lot of money on this franchise with the acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 with staggering figure of US$4 billion so  expectations are very high indeed. And of course, we are excited about their push to make more awesome Star Wars movies.
