We have all seen the massive behind the scenes look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens thanks to Vanity Fair not long ago. One of the most intriguing pictures is the Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o mocap setup for a character named Maz Kanata, the pirate leader. She has a castle housing a crew that is described as “Galactic travelers, smugglers, and other assorted riffraff..” by the production people. Anyway, Lucasfilm released an official peek just for this particular character.
Eagle eyed fans might spot a brief image in the teaser scene where a character hands over Luke Skywalker father’s lightsaber to Leia. The profile of the face at the top right of the frame could be Maz Kanata.
For this movie, the production crew went through a lot of trouble an efforts to use props, puppets, prosthetic and practical effect whenever it is applicable. Now the question here is, will Maz Kanata fully CG or be produced using clever puppetry to achieve the effects? Or maybe both? If this picture is 100 percent true, then it is understandable why the film crew go for mocap in case of Maz Kanata. The fact that they are casting a very talented actress for Maz Kanata will suggest a deep, genuine performance to bring out the character’s full potential.
