Justin Lin, who’s widely praised for the action packed Fast and Furious series is the appointed director for Star Trek 3 after Roberto Orci decided to beam away. Under Lin’s hand, four Fast and Furious movies made a cool US$1.9 billion runaway which makes him one of the hottest action directors in Hollywood now.
The first two movies of the rebooted Star Trek movies were directed by J.J. Abrams, who is now busy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The last Star Trek movie made Paramount Pictures a neat US$467.4 million in 2013 so the studio has been looking around to get a new director after Abrams did not return for a hattrick since he was attached to Star Wars instead.
Justin Lin is also rumoured to be directing the next Bourne movie, The Bourne Betrayal starring Jeremy Renner, but it’s been temporarily put on an ice since Matt Damon’s Bourne movie with Paul Greengrass got waved in instead. Besides Justin Lin, four other names were considered for the directorship chair after Robert Orci’s departure, namely Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) and Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon, Warcraft).
So will the next Star Trek be based on more action and explosions instead of exploring, discovering new wonders?
