Another major announcement by Blizzard besides Starcraft II is Overwatch, a project that used to be the cancelled Project MMO Titan.
It is a squad based combat with two opposing sides of six heroes in each team, battling it out in various locations with specific team objectives. Players will play in “pick up and play first person shooter” according to Blizzard. It is set in a futuristic world with shades of Pixar’s Incredibles in abundance. Shades of anime, superheroes and almost everything can be seen in the introductory video presented by Blizzard.
“Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. He adds “With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”
Beta will be available early 2015, according to Blizzard.
However, a leak from insider sources indicate the company is still pondering whether to make it F2P (Free to Play) or expansion focused model. Blizzard has not yet figured out a monetary model especially if players have to pay for their heroes or not. The development team is egging their bosses to publish the game in 2015 but the higher ups at Blizzard is not convinced it is ready. There is a small window of release in December 2015 but the game is most probably will be out blazing in early 2016 instead.
