Getting a data connection overseas can be a chore. Not all countries have a prepaid card system and frankly, roaming charges can give you a heart attack whenever you come back. Now HK based Wiyo are offering Malaysians an alternative way to get data when you head out of the country.
Wiyo provides short-term data rental to outbound Malaysian travelers. And how do they do this you ask? By partnering with international mobile operators all the world over, they’re able to let consumers get the best internet access over the best available networks. Currently the service covers 25 countries with another 60 countries to be added in the pipeline. And if you think that it’s going to be pricey, think again as prices start from RM30 a day with discounts if you opt for a longer tenure. So how does it work?
First you’ll have to register. You can head online to www.wiyo.my or call the Wiyo hotline at 017-8888201 and make a booking. You’ll then have to select your departure and arrival date, and country of visit. After filling up the relevant online forms and submitting them, all you have to do is wait for Wiyo device pack will be couriered to you (with a RM10 shipping fee) or pick up the device at Publika KL. Simple right? We do admit though, it would be much simpler if there was a pick up and drop off point for Wiyo at either KLIA or KLIA 2 as that would make the process so much more easier.
This isn’t the first pocket WifI rental service in Malaysa but based on how Wiyo has presented themselves, it does look like the first service with some extensive local support. Now lets hope they setup some booths at our airports like we mentioned above and it’ll be even more convenient to use their services.
