New Star Trek: Beyond trailer loses the Beastie Boys, slows down, and gives us a look at the human side of Trek.

Fans were understandably worried when the first trailer for Star Trek: Beyond released in December felt more like a generic action sci-fi flick than the roots of the series – exploration, humanity, and wonder. The second trailer still has a ton of action, but the mood feels far more dialed in.

Trailer 2 features some gorgeous CGI footage of the Enterprise getting into serious trouble, the obligatory check-ins on our regular cast members, a decent amount of screentime for two new alien characters (one of whom drapes herself over Kirk’s chair in the classic leg-over-armrest pose’) as well as hints of a new ship, with a profile suspiciously similar to Captain Archer’s Enterprise NX-01.

Beyond sees the torched passed from JJ Abrams to Justin Lin (2009’s Fast & Furious, Furious 6) with a script co-written by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz). Joining the cast are Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, The Avengers, Prometheus) as the alien villain, and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) as a new ally.

The trailer starts with some human moments, where Kirk deals with the legacy left by his hero father (complete with footage from the first film), to some light philosophy about space before diving straight into the action – something terrible befalls the Enterprise, and the crew having to get themselves out of various scrapes and hairy situations.

Star Trek: Beyond is the third film in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise, which began with 2009’s Star Trek and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. The series stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and John Cho as the main crew of the Enterprise.
