Alan Rickman as Severus snape

It’s a sad day for Harry Potter fans. News has come in that Alan Rickman who played Professor Snape in the movie adaptations of J.K Rowling’s books has passed on after a battle with cancer.

Rickman, 69, was a much loved British actor that first came into mainstream prominence as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’ dastardly adversary in the first Die Hard movie. The actor’s signature voice and diction, not to mention sardonic personality made him an instant hit with audiences, and he would go on to play even more memorable roles, villainous and not.

While Rickman thrived in both mainstream movies as well as the stage, for many geeks he will be remembered as the Sherriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Metatron in Dogma, Alexander Dane aka Dr. Lazarus in Galaxy Quest, and of course, Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.

The last film we can see Rickman in, or rather hear him in, would be the upcoming Alice Through the Looking Glass movie where he plays Absolem the caterpillar.
