Publisher Overlap have announced an anime adaptation for Ao Jyumonji and Eiri Shinrai’s light novel series Hai to Gensou Grimgal/Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash or 灰と幻想のグリムガル.
Yes, it is another one of those “modern person trapped in RPG-like world and can’t get out” story like Sword Art Online, Overlord and others. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind vastly popular Sword Art Online and Aldnoah Zero will be the production house behind this project with Ryosuke Nakamura (Aoi Bungaku series, Aiura) doing the direction and series composition while Mieko Hosoi (Aoi Bungaku series, Aiura) handling the character design.
The difference here is the characters are real flesh and blood, not as a game avatar. So they actually have no special skills or powers, and will have to rely on their own wits to survive the RPG-like world around them.
Official synopsis:
“Before Haruhito had realized what happened, he was surrounded by darkness. Why was he here?
Where was here? Even now, he still didn’t know. Those around him were the same as him, no one remembered anything other than their own names. And when they emerged from the darkness, the world that awaited them seemed like something out of a videogame.
In order to survive, Haruhito forms a party with the others, learns fighting skills, and as a soldier in the reserve force, takes his first steps into the world of Grimgal. What awaits him there, he doesn’t know…
This the story of an adventure born from the ashes.”
The light novel for Hai to Gensou Grimgal already has five volumes published since June 2013 and received a manga adaptation by Mutsumi Okuhashi since April this year. The anime series is scheduled for airing winter next year.
