The first look at Pennywise the clown as played by Bill Skarsgård for the new It film is here, and it doesn’t look any less scary than the original.

The image is thanks to Entertainment Weekly, who made available the exclusive image. Granted its not a totally faithful representation of the original Pennywise but it’s still a terrifying clown look that would haunt your dreams.

In an interview with Skarsgård, he said this about his character;

“It’s such an extreme character. Inhumane. It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown. I’m playing just one of the beings It creates. It’s important that we do something fresh and original for this one. It’s purposely not going toward that weird, greasy look. It truly enjoys the shape of the clown Pennywise, and enjoys the game and the hunt. What’s funny to this evil entity might not be funny to everyone else. But he thinks it’s funny.

“There’s a childishness to the character, because he’s so closely linked to the kids. The clown is the manifestation of children’s imaginations, so there’s something child-like about that.”

Tim Curry played the clown in the TV movie adaptation of the story and he was pretty amazing so Skarsgård does have quite big (clown) shoes to fill. The movie will be directed by Andrés Muschietti (Mama) and the movie itself will be split into two separate films, set in the 1980’s as opposed to being set in the ’50s as written in the novels.

The first will focus on “The Losers Club” a group of friends who band together to battle a monster who is killing kids in Derry, Maine. The second being set 30 years after the events of the first film where the monster makes a return and the old friends reunite once again to try and destroy It once and for all.

It will be coming 8 September 2017.
