Overwatch releases tomorrow – here’s a new short film to help make the wait less unbearable.
Blizzard Entertainment have been producing awesome cinematics since their early days with Warcraft 1 and the tradition has continued over the decades. Games like Starcraft and World of Warcraft had legendary cinematics, but until now, the company has stuck to following in-game narratives.
However, new team-based shooter Overwatch can’t deliver much story during its fast paced action gameplay, so the team has been taking the opportunity to flesh out the world and characters with a series of animated shorts. Season One of the 4 episode series concludes with Hero, set in a small town with a little girl in trouble being rescued by an unlikely character.
The short is gorgeous, featuring Blizzard’s signature animation quality and production values. Keen-eyed viewers will notice a World of Warcraft easter egg (mrrrggleguuurgglee!) and the sharp-eared will recognise the talents of Fred Tatasciore, who voiced Nikolai Belinski in Call of Duty and Starcraft’s Zeratul.
