Recently, there’s been a rumour going around that Hollywood is adapting Naruto.
Sources claim that Lionsgate (Mockingjay series) is set to adapt the beloved anime franchise into a live action movie. The director is rumoured to be Micheal Gracey who has done visual effects for shows like The Genie from Down Under 2 and The Magician. For the director’s chair, he is currently attached to The Witches (Roald Dahl’s version) for Warner Bros and biopics like Rocketman (Elton John) and Muppet Man (Jim Henson).
Avi Arad, who professed to be fan of the anime/manga is the producer via Arad Productions while Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley will be looking out for studio’s interest in this project. No idea on who will be cast in this movie yet for now but don’t be gob smacked if there is “white-washing” here. This is not a huge surprise except for it took Hollywood so long to grab this franchise. Besides this, Hollywood is going through difficult development of Akira, filming Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson in it and director Adam Wingard still working on the live adaptation of Death Note.
So far the track record of Hollywood’s flirtation with anime/manga is a bit dodgy with tepid, almost angry response to Dragonball: Evolution but there are bright moments like The Edge of Tomorrow.
It remains to be seen if live action Naruto will able shine with the Hollywood touch.
