Well, this came out of nowhere. Daniel Day-Lewis is considered by many to be the greatest method actor of all time. And all of a sudden, he decides he’s done with acting? What on earth is going on?
While Daniel Day-Lewis isn’t my favourite actor working together – Ryan Gosling is – he’s still bloody great. He’s got 5 Oscar nominations under his belt, in which he won three of them for Lincoln, There Will Be Blood and My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown. He is the ONLY male actor in history to have won THREE Best Actor Academy Awards. And now, he’s retiring. Let that sink in.
As reported by Variety, Day-Lewis’ spokeswoman, Leslee Dart, had this to say:
Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.
Daniel Day-Lewis and his representatives did not give a reason for his sudden retirement. But we’ll definitely keep you guys updated if we hear any whispers.
This announcement is both shocking and sad. Thankfully, we’ll be able to see Daniel Day-Lewis’ masterful acting one last time in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread which will be hitting cinemas later this year. The official release date of this movie is still unconfirmed. Daniel Day-Lewis previously collaborated with Paul Thomas Anderson in There Will Be Blood.
