See what Gearbox has in store for the HD remake of the classic science fiction RTS.
Fifteen months after a game’s release is a highly unusual time to get a massive content update – especially if that game is an HD remaster rather than a full release. But Gearbox Software are releasing a major update for Homeworld: Remastered that fundamentally alters how the game plays in both single and multiplayer.
The first of the big changes is an all new formation system – ships of the same type can now ball into massive formations; ships of different types have improved AI when formed up, and these formations are faction-specific to take advantage of the different firing arcs and ship types.
Secondly, all projectiles in the game are now ballistic – shots that miss can now continue onward to strike targets behind the original one, and miss chances are more significant as shots take time to travel to targets, meaning fast-moving ships at long distances have greater chances to avoid damage completely.
Multiplayer balance changes and modding support round out the patch notes, and this major update is due to be released soon.
Homeworld: Remastered is a HD edition of the classic 90s science fiction real time strategy games which allowed players to build fleets and move them through 3D space. Lauded for its graphics and numerous gameplay innovations, the series had no major releases in a decade until the rights were purchased by Gearbox Software in 2013. The most recent game in the series, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a prequel set on a desert planet rather than in space. Gearbox Software have indicated that they are very interested in Homeworld 3.
