Marvel has been trying to bring Runaways to the big screen for an extremely long time, and while it likely won’t get a movie release anytime soon, Hulu wants to adapt it into a live-action TV show.

Marvel apparently have been trying to adapt Runaways into a movie for a long time now, with Joss Whedon interested in directing it before he was on board for the Avengers. They even had Drew Pearce writing up a screenplay for it and the studio prepped for a shoot in 2011, but ultimately stopped all work on the project to make way for The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

Now, Hulu is picking up the project and will have showrunners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl/The O.C) will be running the show.

“We’ve known the Runaways’ story would make great television,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, “and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie–who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience–write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable.”

runaways

Marvel’s Runaways focuses on a group of kids who happen to have supervillain parents; who are part of a group called The Pride. The kids band together and use their own powers and tech/skills to work against them.

Here’s the main cast of characters from the comics:

Niko – a dark magic using witch

Molly – an invincible 11-year-old with super strength, is the youngest of the group

Chase – wields the Fistigons, a pair of flame gloves made by his mad scientist parents

Karolina – an extraterrestrial (who is also openly gay) whose parents are Hollywood stars when they’re not being supervillains

Alex – has heightened intelligence, is the child of mob bosses and is likely the most normal appearing of the bunch

Gertrude – has a telepathic connection with a velociraptor called Old Lace, parents are time travellers.

More members might join the lineup later, but these are the core members of the comic.

Hopefully we hear more about the show as they proceed with development.
