We finally get a peek at the vehicles that will show up in the Independence Day: Resurgence. One of which was officially unveiled by 20th Century Fox as the The Moon Tug, as you can see above. This particular machine will be operated by Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), an ex-ace pilot. According to Hemsworth, his character is an orphan who lost his parents during the alien invasion in 1996 and he eventually signed up for the military. He grew up to be an ace fighter pilot but something happened. In Hemsworth’s own words:
“His ego kind of got in the way, and he made a bad mistake, a bad decision. He kind of put someone’s life at risk, and he got the great job of driving this Moon Tug – which is basically a forklift on the moon, where he gets to move around different pieces on the moon, which is not really an exciting job for a fighter pilot like himself.”
So, what did Jake used to fly? Perhaps this photo below will give some clue:
Apparently, it is a hybrid jet fighter – a combination of human and alien technology. Fans will remember that there are a lot of alien vehicle wreckage in the end of the first movie so it is no surprise that humanity will able incorporate their technology with Earth’s. Dylan Hiller (Jessie Usher), step-son of Will Smith’s Captain Steven Hiller will be flying this fighter in the movie. Another one is an Asian female fighter pilot Rain played by Angelababy or Angela Yeung. Aviation geeks might feel this hybrid fighter have a strong resemblance to the real life 5th generation Russian stealth jet fighter, the PAK-FA.
The movie is still in production at Albuquerque, New Mexico, set for release in 24 June 2016. The makers promising “global extinction” with this rather ominous poster:
With a reported US$200 million budget, we do wonder what kind of carnage and destruction that Emmerich the director will bring this time.
