Update 1: So we managed to get in touch with Pioneer Films and they’ve responded to our inquiries on the cancellation of Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) in The Philippines. For now, the movie’s release date has been postponed indefinitely until they can secure a new release date for it in Philippine theatres.
As for why the theatres did not pick up the movie for the original April 15 weekend release, the representative from Pioneer Films that answer our inquiry said:
“There are a lot of competition for the April 15 release date, and for some reason, the theatres chose not to pick A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) for screening.”
As for that reason, we believe it’s because 15 April marks the end of the Holy Week in the Philippines making it an ideal day for movie releases. And with potential blockbuster movies having the same release date (from what we understand Fast and Furious 8, The Boss Baby and Can’t Help Falling in Love will be releasing on that day), it isn’t a far stretch to see why the theatres would rather prioritise those movies instead.
Whatever it is though, at least anime fans in The Philippines can breathe a sigh of relief as Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice) has yet to be cancelled and is just awaiting a new release date to be announced. Once the new date has been announced, you can be sure we’ll be informing all of you when it is!

Philippines anime fans, here’s a bit of sad news for you. It seems that will NOT be hitting theatres on 15 April in the Philippines. The cancellation of the film was announced recently by the film distributor, Pioneer Films.
The reason given for the cancellation; the unavailability of theatres to show the movie. Now while the movie has been cancelled for April 15, it hasn’t been confirmed that the movie has been totally cancelled from showing in the Philippines.
It is possible that they might have to push the release date to another day. So far, no other details have been released and we’ve reached out to Pioneer Films for confirmation if this will be a full cancellation or just a delay. So stay tuned for updates!
Koe no Katachi or A Silent Voice follows the story of a deaf elementary school girl, Shoko Nishimiya. Upon transferring, meets a boy named Shoya Ishida in her new class. Shoya, who is not deaf, leads the class in bullying Shoko, because she is deaf. As the bullying continues, the class starts to bully Shoya for bullying Shoko. After graduating from elementary school, Shoko and Shoya do not speak to each other… until later, when Shoya, tormented over his past, decides he must see Shoko once more. Shoya wants to make amends for what he did in elementary school and be Shoko’s friend
