It seems that Konami has given up all pretense of wanting to make any triple A titles, if what has been happening recently is to be judged. However despite their recent actions and developments in the company, the official line of the company is that their NOT giving up on developing them.
This was highlighted in an email to Nintendo Life when they sent an inquiry about the matter. In the email, Konami states:
[box] “I can promise you that we’re definitely not leaving ‘Metal Gear’ behind or anything like that. I know some blogs were claiming that online this morning, but I’m not really sure where they’d be getting that from. We’re definitely working on console games and franchises such as ‘Metal Gear,’ ‘Silent Hill,’ ‘Castlevania,’ ‘PES’ and all the rest.”[/box]
“We are definitely working on console games and franchises…”, now that sounds pretty much like they’re NOT giving up on triple A titles. Maybe the fact that Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain has been doing very well in the ratings department has given Konami some pause? And to add more meat to the whole denial issue, Konami does have plans to crank out Metal Gear Online on 6 October 2016. However, it remains to be see if that will be a like the Metal Gear we all have come to love, or something totally different now that Kojima is out of the picture.
One major concerns that Konami is getting of the triple A game development, is its reported sole focus on mobile game development while games like Silent Hills get cancelled. And when you throw in developments like letting Hideo Kojima go, the exit of Fox Engine director Julien Merceron, and the resignation of both Love Plus creators, you can see why there’s been cause for concern. The only survivor of this seeminly massive cull are the people behind the Pro Evolution Soccer or Winning Eleven series. Incidentally, Konami’s booth at TGS 2015 seemed to be a lot more focused on sports.
However, since there’s been some official denial, maybe, just maybe we’re being paranoid. Perhaps fans of Silent Hills (despite the cancellation) and Castlevania can look forward to a sequel in the future? We’re crossing our fingers and hoping we can.
