If you were a kid in the 90’s you probably remember Captain Planet (and the Planeteers) to a certain degree. We might be seeing the blue and green superhero making his return as Leonardo DiCaprio wants to bring him back for a new battle against pollution.
DiCaprio (and his company Appian Way) and Paramount are apparently in talks to secure the screen rights to the series. They’re also interested in picking up Jono Matt and Glen Powell (Scream Queens) to produce the script.
For those unfamiliar with the original animated series, it basically centered around an international group of teens. Each of which with a magic ring that controlled one of five elements (Eath, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart) which produced Captain Planet when combined, to fight off various eco-villains to save the world from pollution.
Paramount isn’t the first studio to be interested in a Captain Planet reboot however, as Sony had one in the works before the rights lapsed. Paramount and Appian’s take on the character however, is interested in giving the brightly coloured idealistic a grim and gritty makeover, so we’ll just have to see how they’re intending to package that.
