She was with the animation studio for over 3 decades.

Legendary filmmakers Studio Ghibli have lost one of their longest-serving staff members. Makiko Futaki was 58 when she passed away on May 13 of an unspecified illness.

Futaki was involved with nearly all of Studio Ghibli’s films, starting with 1984’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and including such classics as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. She also worked on the seminal film Akira. Her most recent work was When Marnie Was There in 2014.

We at The Hyped Geek give our deepest condolences to Futaki’s family and thank her for her work which has brought beauty and joy to the lives of so many.
