
As if Monopoly the movie or that Hello Kitty feature is not enough, now Sony has bought the rights to a movie that is about emoji/emoticons. Yes, the smiley in the text thing which is started in Japan and had become a worldwide phenomenon to the point that President Obama acknowledged its existence during his visit to Japan recently.
Apparently, the movie has been the bidding target of several studios and Sony emerged as the winner of the war. From what we know, it is an animated movie and a brand-friendly project quite similar to LEGO the Movie.
Eric Siegel (Men at Work) and Anthony Leondis were hired as the script writers with the later also assigned as the director of this flick. Anthony Leondis past efforts including animated short Kung Fu Panda: Secret of the Masters and B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations. Michelle Raimo Kouyate will be supervising the making as the producer.
It is reported that Sony is pushing this project very aggressively. According to Deadline, the studio paid a hefty sum (around seven figures) to win the bidding and the reason as to why they rushing it because there is another project is within their sights.
We are seriously wondering if Hollywood is running out of ideas here.
