Adam Wingard’s adapation of the popular manga Death Note has just flipped over to Netflix, following reports from Warner Bros. stating that they want to decrease the amount of film releases they do annually.
Wingard was supposed to begin production on Death Note when Warner Bros. got cold feet and allowed him to bring the project under someone else’s wing. This isn’t the first time the Warner Bros. has backed out of a Wingard film either, having dropped his film Dead Spy Running.
Death Note as a story, centers around a high school student named Light Yamagi in the manga, who stumbled across a mysterious notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing their name on its pages.
Nat Wolff will be playing the teen, who attempts to use the power for good and attracts the attention of a detective who tries to get to the bottom of the strange deaths.
Margaret Qualley will also be in the film, with Keith Stanfield being considered for a supporting role.
At any rate, hopefully Netflix will allow Wingard to produce Death Note the way he envisions it, and with the amount of traction they’ve had recently, Netflix is only gonna get bigger.
