A comic adaptation has been announced for Voltron: Legendary Defender‘s animated series ahead its Netflix premiere on June 10. The animated series will be a reboot of the 1980’s cartoon series, and it will be produced by Netflix and Dreamworks.

The five issue series adaptation is scheduled to be released in July with a collected graphic novel slated to be available in December this year.

The comic book spin-off will be built on the foundations laid by Voltron: Legendary Defender, which follows the exploits of the paladins of Voltron. The five issue series will be the first of several planned storyline expansions that will be integrated into the animated Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Dreamworks’ Voltron: Legendary Defender head writers, Tim Hedrick and writer Mitch Iverson will be writing the first issue. It opens with a training mission gone wrong when Coran, Princess Allura’s majordomo, falls prey to a villain looking to settle an old debt.

It is up to the Voltron team to save their friend’s life by taking up the risky missions. Each issue of the comic will focus on one of the five pilots that command the giant mecha Voltron.

Five teenagers, Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Shiro, are the pilots of Voltron and together they must defend Arus from King Zarkon’s evil alien force. This time around, each of the main characters’ purpose for joining the mission will be explored.

Like its previous incarnation, Voltron: Legendary Defender will also have a Princess Allura. But this time around, she will be a much tougher and realistic character than the previous incarnations.

Catch Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix on June 10.
