The seminal science fiction series returns to TV next year. Should you be excited, or tentative?
CBS has done what no network has gone in over a decade, since Scott Bakula’s Captain Archer wrapped up his run on Star Trek: Enterprise back in 2005 – brought Star Trek back to the small screen. While the currently ongoing film series is a reboot of the franchise, it’s not currently clear where in the timeline this new television series will stand. Star Trek will begin production this fall for a January 2017 premiere.
The show has yet to be cast, but confirmed to be attached is showrunner Bryan Fuller, a self-professed Trekkie who was writer-producer on Hannibal, Heroes, Star Trek: Voyager, and the executive producer of Pushing Daisies. Alex Kurtzman, who wrote the 2013 film Star Trek: Into Darkness, is also attached as executive producer, as well as Nicholas Meyer, who directed the 2nd and 6th Star Trek films back in the old times that were the 20th century.
The heart of Star Trek has always been in its TV series, with iconic characters like Captain Picard and Seven of Nine meeting new peoples and exploring the future of humanity – there have been over 700 episodes of Star Trek on the small screen. It’s been 11 years since Trekkies had a series to sink into, and CBS has a lot riding on their shoulders – although news that the family of original creator Gene Roddenberry has given the series their seal of approval should help pacify expectations.
