When Harry Styles was initially announced to play a supporting character in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, film fans around the world went “WTF?” I mean this is some dude from ONE DIRECTION. A boyband whose primary demographic is prepubescent girls. Well, as it turns out, even the director himself, didn’t know how popular Harry Styles was.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Nolan had this to say:

I don’t think I was that aware really of how famous Harry was before casting him. I mean, my daughter had talked about him. My kids talked about him, but I wasn’t really that aware of it. So the truth is, I cast Harry because he fit the part wonderfully and truly earned a seat at the table.

Even Oscar Winning Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies – who’s also featured in Nolan’s Dunkirk did not really know who Harry Styles was saying that he learned about Styles from his 11-year-old daughter.

She was just more excited than anything I’ve ever done because I was going to be acting with Harry Styles. I went up in her estimation. I won the Harry!

Dunkirk is set to hit Malaysian cinemas on 20 July 2017.
