Despite the uncertainty about Pacific Rim 2, director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim, Hellboy) forging ahead and tweeted that John Spaihts (Dr. Strange, Prometheus) is writing the script and the budget apparently has already been prepared.
To answer all tweets re: PAC RIM 2: Budget ready. Awaiting script from John Spaihts. Then is up to the studios to give it a green light.

The movie had proven itself to be a hit with the geeks in 2013, as evidenced by the box office performance garnering US$411 million worldwide. Fans have been waiting for the sequel since then but the project was mired in studio politics and budgetary concerns.
The worrying news that the studio has deleted the sequel from its release schedule and the political game between Legendary-Warner Bros and Universal has been downplayed by the director himself repeatedly. This is on top of repeated reports of the movie being pulled or put on hold indefinitely over the last months or so.
del Toro has even joked (or maybe not) that he intends to cast Maisie Williams (Arya Stark in Game of Thrones) as a Jaeger Ranger in the sequel.
The sequel will see the return of Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman if everything goes as planned. The original schedule is August 2017 but recent developments have pushed the release date into an unspecified timeline.
Let’s hope it will get sorted out soon.
