Google’s Project Ara is not the only one going to town with the modular smartphone concept. Finland’s Circular Device is dipping their toes into the field as well and they’ve come up with project called Puzzlephone which is scheduled for launch in second quarter of 2015.

Unlike Project Ara, which has a myriad of components and sections, the Puzzlephone tries to keep it a little more simple. It’s divided into 3 main components – the Spine (LCD, speakers and basic frame), the Heart (battery and complimentary electronic parts) and the Brain (CPU and camera modules). Users will be able to modify and upgrade individual components as much as they please or need to. This will benefit the user since it will extend the lifespan of the system and reduce wastage.

The company has been working on the phone since 2013 and stated that the we can expect the Puzzlephone at a mid-range pricing. The system will be based on Android OS and will also be open to third party developers for the modular blocks.

Now with both Project Ara and Puzzlephone promoting the modular phone concept, it would be interesting to see if the concept catch on with other manufacturers and most importantly, consumers.
