13. Paging General Syndulla
We couldn’t quite catch the rank, but as Jyn talks to Chirrut and Baze after the council meeting, a page for General (or was it Admiral?) Syndulla can be heard over the speakers in the background. We’re assuming this has to be Hera Syndulla from Rebels, which would also explain the Ghost being parked outside!
14. Parallel Lines
There’s some lines of dialogue that are so similar to others in the series that they have to be intentional. Here’s a few we spotted.
During either the escape Jedha or Eadu, Cassian screams into his comm “K2-K2 where are you?” which is too similar to C-3PO’s repeated refrain of “R2-D2 Where are you” to be a coincidence. We admit, we could be reaching here.
After Bodhi manages to convince the Imperial forces to allow captured shuttle through the shield aperture on Scarif, K-2SO says “impressive” in a way that is eerily reminiscent of how Darth Vader’s says the same when he sizes up Luke at Cloud City in Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.
When sneaking into the citadel tower on Scarif, K2-SO is just about to say “I’ve got a bad feeling about this”, one of the most repeated lines in the franchise, only to be cut off by Cassian Andor.
15. Red Leader, Gold leader
One of our favourite nods to Episode IV – A New Hope has to be the leaders of the fighter squadrons that attack Scarif. Red Squadron (X-wings) & Gold Squadron (Y-wings) appear to be led by the same leaders that attack the Death Star Episode IV – A New Hope!
It looks like footage of them in their cockpits from Episode IV has been re-purposed to be used here.
It might be a stretch, but also we think that the very clear destruction of “Red 5” at Scarif, might be there to explain how Luke, a relative latecomer to the Rebel Alliance, ends up with that call sign on Episode IV.
16. Familiar faces
As the portion of the Rebel Fleet under General Raddus takes off from Yavin 4, R2-D2 and C-3PO are standing in the foreground. Probably waiting to board Captain Antilles’ Tantive IV.
17. Vader in Space
And finally, the Blockade Runner escaping Vader’s clutches at the end of the film is Captain Antilles Tantive IV, next seen in the opening of Episode IV, pursued by Vader’s Star Destroyer.
Luckily the rebel officer (or was it Captain Antilles himself?) gives the order to ensure the escape pods are prepared at the end of Rogue One. Otherwise, R2-D2 and C-3PO could have had a very short adventure in Episode IV.
Your Turn
That’s all the references we spotted, did you catch any we missed? We’re pretty sure there has to be a Wilhelm scream in there somewhere, maybe on the landing pad at Eadu, and the Millennium Falcon has got to be in one of those establishing shots somewhere.
Let us know if you spotted any we missed below in the comments below or tweet them to @mcnastyprime and @thehypedgeek, and we’ll add yours to the list!
